I love Google tag manager since this is one of the most powerful tools Google has done and it’s one of those tools that I often see used incorrectly. I go into a Google Ads account and I often see the Google tag or analytics set up but the containers are empty or it’s not being used.
Why is the tag manager important?
The Google ads tag manager is used to scale conversions. By this it means having the tool to know who’s coming to your website, what they’re doing on your on the site, and being able to create audiences and goals.
The tag manager lets you track your target market’s behavior on your website pages. You can see who’s buying and who’s not buying. Additionally, you can do remarketing to these audiences.
How to setup the Google tag manager
Setup an account
Just fill in the necessary information like the company name and the country. You may tick the box that says “Share the data anonymously with Google and others” if you want to share data with Google.
Then under the Container Setup section, just fill in the container name with your website link and click the right target platform to continue
Grab the tag manager code
The next thing you need to do is to copy paste the codes that appear on the next page to your website
Create a new tag
Go to tag manager and click the create a tag button
Then choose Google analytics for the type of tag to configure
Set a new variable
Once you are in this section, you need to go to your Google analytics> admin> property settings to get your UA ID.
Copy the UA ID and paste this under the tracking ID section below
Adding a trigger
Just set-up which pages you want to add your trigger as shown below
That is how you set-up your tag manager. You can see all your tags under the tags section below
Submit and publish
Just click the submit and publish button to start tracking behaviors on your website
