When it comes to running your Google ads, you do not just run your ads and wait for leads to come in. You should also properly track your leads so you can identify the leads that are coming from which marketing channel.
Properly tracking your leads in Google ads will also help you measure your ad performance and you can easily make the necessary changes on your ads to make them perform better.
There are different ways of measuring leads from your advertising campaign and one of the ways to measure a Google ad campaign is phone call tracking. This is a conversion tracking method that helps you identify the calls coming from each campaign that you are running.
We use CallRail on our conversion tracking because we have some specific needs and data that we like to track. But if you just want to see how your Google phone call ads are performing, then you can use this free phone call tracking with Google tag manager.
How to set up phone call tracking with Google tag manager
Note: Before we dive into how you can set up your phone call tracking in Google, you should refer to this article first, Google Tag Manager Guide on how you set up your Google tag manager account.
Step 1: Create a new tag
Go to your Google tag manager account, click on the dashboard view of the account you are working on, and then click Add new tag
Step 2: Name your tag
A pop-up window will appear and rename the Untitle tag with your own tag title. For example, phone call clicks
Step 3: Configure the tag type
Under the tag configuration, click choose a tag type to begin setup, then select Google Ads calls from website conversion
Then, from the rest of the settings, there are three fields that you need to set up
- displayed phone number to replace
- conversion ID
- conversion label
Step 4: Set up the tag trigger
Next, rename untitled trigger to something like phone call- click trigger, then select trigger to on all pages
Step 5: Save and publish tag
In this step, there are multiple steps you need to go through before publishing. First, you need to click save then submit button the publish.
