Did you know that Google ads provide free call tracking for your call ads or ads with calls or location extensions? This call tracking tool helps you better understand your ad keywords, ad groups, and campaigns and see if these are all working well for your business.
Tracking your calls in Google will make you a better advertiser because tracking conversions helps boost your return of investment (ROI).
Another reason why you need to start tracking calls from ads is you can take advantage of automated bid strategies such as Target cost-per-action (CPA) and Target return on ad spend (ROAS). These help you automatically optimize your campaigns according to your business goals.
So let us proceed with setting up your call tracking for Google ads.
How to set up call tracking for Google ads call campaign
Step 1: Log in to your Google Ads account. Click the Tools icon > Measurements > Conversions
Step 2: Click the blue plus icon > Phone calls > then select Calls from ads using call extensions or call-only ads then continue
Step 3: Under Category, select a description for your conversion action. This section allows you to segment your conversion reports to see similar conversions together
Step 4: Under Value, select Each phone call is worth then enter the value. You may also select don’t assign a value
Step 5: Under Count, you can select whether to count every or one conversion per ad click. You can select “every” if you are tracking sales. You can select “one” if you are tracking leads
Step 6: Under call length, enter the minimum length in seconds that you want a phone call to last to be counted as a conversion
Step 7: Under conversion window, select a conversion window. This section allows you to track an ad click and how long you want to track an ad click for conversion action. You can set this from 1-60 days
Step 8: Click create and continue
Advanced settings:
- Click Include in “Conversions”. The default setting includes data for this conversion action in the Conversions report. If unchecked, the data will still be included in the “All conversions” column.
- Click Attribution model. This allows you to choose how to assign credit for each conversion.
Conclusion
If you want to track calls outside Google ads, there are tools that you can use. One of them is Call Rail. We use this tool in our agency and this is a good call tracking tool so far. Call Rail allows you to set up data into Google Analytics and you can connect this to Google ads account.
Aside from properly tracking your Google ads calls, I also suggest that you listen to all of your recorded calls to see the quality of leads you are getting from your campaigns. Like for example, you hear a foreign language on the other end, then this is likely a junk robo call. You can check your calls to give you an idea of how to tweak your ads so you are only paying for leads that count.
